Paralympic Celebrations
Revd Mark Janes, minister of New North Road BC, Huddersfield, shared this incredible story with us, following last years Paralympics . He highlighted the remarkable journey of Guillaume Junior Atangana and his guide Donard Nyamjua—two extraordinary athletes with a powerful story of resillence, faith and triumph.
On Sunday, 22nd September, 2024, New North Baptist Church gathered to celebrate their achievements, reflecting on the challenges they have overcome and the faith that has carried them through. Guillaume, a visually impaired runner, and Donard, his dedicated guide, compete together in perfect synchrony, reaching astonishing speeds on the track. Their journey reached new heights at the Paris Paralympics 2024, where they competed in both the 100 metres and 400 metres—and made history by winning bronze in the 400 metres.
A Journey of Resilience and Faith
While their sporting success is remarkable, Guillaume and Donard’s story is even more inspiring. Revd Mark Janes wrote that both young men are refugees, and their journey has been marked by profound challenges. They first arrived at New North Road Baptist Church while seeking asylum, facing constant uncertainty as they navigated life in a new country.
Despite the obstacles—relocation after relocation, the fight to stay together, and the rigorous demands of their athletic dreams—they persevered with steadfast courage and faith. Revd Jones further revealed that during their time at New North Road Church, Donard confessed his faith through baptism and when they returned to visit the church, it was marvellous to hear their testimonies of God's grace.
A Symbol of Hope on the World Stage
At the Paris Paralympics, Guillaume had the immense honour of being selected as the flag bearer for the refugee team, a recognition of his strength, determination, and the journey he represents. Though the entire church would have loved to be there cheering in the stands, two members—Trish and Susan—were able to travel to Paris, witnessing the races firsthand and sharing in the excitement of the moment.
An Inspiration to Many
The New North Baptist Church family gives thanks to God for Guillaume and Donard’s incredible achievements, the refugee team, the coaching teams and all who have supported them. Their story is a powerful reminder of faith in action—overcoming trials, trusting in God’s provision, and running the race set before them, both on and off the track.
Congratulations, Guillaume and Donard—you are champions in every sense of the word!
